BENIN

Local Partner: Humanium & Terra Benin – HT BENIN

Recipients: 20 orphaned children

Harambee’s Contribution: €3,500

The living conditions in the village of Igoho, in the Dassa area (central Benin), are particularly difficult, as the extreme poverty of the population especially afflicts children. On top of this, the orphans who survive end up in host families, but in a state of total marginalization. The program allows 20 children to learn reading and comprehension, spelling, speaking and communication, solving math problems as well as life lessons such as cooperation, forgiveness, patience, hope, optimism, creative thinking, etc. 

Activity

The project aims to provide support and education to orphans who are victims of traumatic experiences.

BURUNDI

Local Partner: SOS Associative Women’s Network for Law and Development—SOS RAMD

Recipients: 50 Batwa children and 100 women between 18 and 30 years of age

Harambee’s Contribution: €15,430

In Burundi, the Batwa community represents 1% of the population and is recognized by the National Constitution as the third ethnic group with the Hutu and the Tutsis. It is a minority that has always been discriminated against and enjoys no rights, not even basic ones. The majority of them are illiterate and live in very precarious housing structures. With the decline of traditional sources of income (hunting, blacksmithing and pottery), this population survives by begging.

Activity

The project seeks to help the population of Mutimbuzi, contributing to the schooling of children and the socio-economic promotion of women.

Democratic Republic of CONGO

Local Partner: Congolese Center for Culture, Training and Development–CECFOR

Recipients: 150 students and 95 nurses.

Harambee’s Contribution: €40,000

The Higher Institute of Nursing Sciences in Kinshasa has offered qualified professional training in the nursing sector since 1997, in a country where the lack of infrastructure and qualified personnel limit access to medical treatment, especially for mothers and children.

Activity

The objective of this project is to help improve the professional training of the nursing staff, by offering study courses and training. The project also provides scholarships, which partially cover the costs for those who most need it.

Democratic Republic of CONGO

Local Partner: Monkole Hospital 

Recipients: 10 Nursing students

Harambee’s Contribution: $56,000 covering 4 years

Monkole Hospital in Kinshasa, DR Congo is home to the Nursing School, Institut Supérieur en Science Infirmières (ISSI). Harambee USA Foundation Nursing Scholarship Program helps subsidize the four-year Bachelor’s degree education of at least 10 nursing students beginning in 2018-2019 school year.

Activity

The objective is to help aspiring nursing students who cannot afford to pay for their tuition. The scholarship covers 75% of the full tuition per year. 

KENYA – Purosangue Deep Breath

Local Partner: Purosangue Athletics Club

Recipients: The direct beneficiaries are 20 young local athletes of about 20 years, selected according to their attitudes. The indirect beneficiaries are their families and the children to whom will be offered the opportunity to play sports on an ongoing basis, with qualified staff.

Harambee’s contribution:  € 20,000

Purosangue is highly specialized in the field of running. It trains high-level athletes respecting them in every aspect of their personal and professional life. Purosangue grants them scholarships, accommodation, supports in the workout and selects with them the international competitions to take part, but above all, PUROSANGUE does NOT retain any percentage on their winnings. In return, it demands from athletes an irreproachable conduct in their private, sporting and professional life, inspired by the NO DOPING culture.

Activity

The project aims at support children and teenagers through the practice of sport providing continuous training: in the techniques of training; sports massage; the use of the stopwatch and the organization of competitions. The sports training will be supplemented with the teaching of other subjects such as photography and video-maker so that future coaches are also able to produce photographic and video material. A computer course will also be implemented as indispensable tool for communication strategies to allow participants to manage the relationships among athletes, managers, organizers, and social network.


KENYA
– EASTLAND COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY

Local Partner: Strathmore Educational Trust

Recipients: 60 students from the mechanics course, aged 18-35, from the outskirts of Nairobi.

Harambee’s Contribution: €20,000

In Kenya, more than 67% of the unemployed are young, and of this group, around 90% have no training. There is also a large gap between the skills required by the market and those offered by various educational institutions. In addition, the informal microenterprise sector employs almost 9 out of every 10 workers in the private sector. Boosting productivity and encouraging integration in the formal sector would increase employment, improve access to credit and contribute to the increase in national GDP. In this context, the Eastlands College of Technology, since 2003, offers professional training in the field of electronic technology and communications to disadvantaged and unemployed youth in the suburbs of Nairobi.

Activity

The aim of the project is to strengthen the Eastlands College of Technology by setting up a mechanical and equipment laboratory

MOZAMBIQUE

Promoter entity: Dignity Mozambique

Beneficiaries: 60 young women

Harambee’s Contribution: €20,000

Tete, in Mozambique, is one of the poorest and most vulnerable provinces. Dignity Mozambique is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of the dignity of human work, through the professional training of young people, especially girls. The main training objective is to improve the economic and social conditions of the beneficiaries (learning group), assisting them to become active and productive as group members and leaders, with the goal of establishing, at the end of each workshop, small and medium-sized enterprises. The training also includes computer, management, economics, planning, communication. The project aims to facilitate the local trade of all the products marked "Dignity Made" and of craft production carried out respecting human dignity and rights in order to encourage the development of each person and of the whole community.

Activity

The project will offer professional training and employment opportunities to young women in the cities of Chitima and Tete through the creation of four craft workshops, focusing on carrying out restoration courses, in tailoring, drawing and painting, wood creations.

RWANDA

Local Partner: National Secretariat of Catholic Teaching / Rwanda’s Episcopal Conference

Recipients:
75 single mothers

Harambee’s Contribution: €18,000

In Rwanda, the widespread problem of unwanted pregnancies in girls has serious consequences, as these girls are forced to leave school, become marginalized and live in a state of perpetual shame. Even children are not welcome and have a future marked by discrimination, even though mothers have been abused and are not absolutely responsible for the incident. The Rwandan government is implementing a series of actions to combat the phenomenon, but there is still much to be done. The project, in collaboration with the local Episcopal Conference, aims to ensure the professional training of young mothers in the area of ​​Kigali, Butare and Ruhengeri to facilitate their recruitment in small businesses.

Activity

Providing professional training courses for single mothers in local companies, at a theoretical and practical level, to facilitate their employment.

UGANDA

Local Partner: Kelim Foundation

Recipients: 700 students

Harambee’s Contribution: €20,416

The project takes place in the Mulajje area, where the “St. Charles Lwanga” high school is located, which provides education to some 700 boys and girls. The Institute is run by the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish of Mulajje, which, however, cannot guarantee adequate infrastructures and services due to lack of economic resources.

Activity

In order to provide a healthy and safe school environment, the project involves renovating classrooms and dormitories.
