THERE IS A VOID TO FILL IN THE WAY AFRICA IS COMMUNICATED IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD
Mainstream media stereotypes tell only half the story of Africa and its diverse peoples by painting a distorted picture of these nations. What we get are – almost exclusively – images of war, corruption, social unrest, epidemics, extreme poverty, and hopelessness. When our collective imagination begins to align with these representations, we come to believe that Africa has nothing positive to contribute to the world. Those beliefs turn into attitudes toward African nations, which then influence world-wide expectations.

TELLING THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AFRICAN STORY
Harambee USA is working to change those perceptions and fill that void by opening a window to Africa that is authentic and unfiltered. We strive to break the cycle of negative – often politicized – media coverage about Africa by promoting a deeper understanding of what this complex continent is really like. Mutual understanding leads to collaboration, progress and respect. A better future for Africa and a better future for all.

TO DISCOVER AFRICA, LET AFRICANS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
Nobody knows their homelands better than they do. As obvious as this may sound, we often seem to forget it and rarely do we take the time to hear them speak in the first person. Harambee USA doesn’t seek to paint a “pretty” picture of Africa, as we would do the continent as much of a disservice as the mainstream media does with its focus on sensationalism and pity. Without avoiding the truth about the hardships and conflicts, we give African men, women, and children the space to tell us their stories and share their knowledge, culture, struggles, and dreams of peace, security, work, and well-being. In their own words.

Solidarity signifies a harmony of interests and responsibilities for the sake of a common goal. By allowing Africa its own voice, we discover the common humanity that binds us all together as one.
